Spain's border crisis isn't just Europe's problem; it's a stark warning about what happens when governments lose control, communities lose confidence, and the consequences become impossible to ignore.
If you have been listening to your buddy Malcolm Nance who is doing a special live just on this in a half an hour, you would know that your boss and our government is behind this special op to destabilize Spain and sew doubt in Americans regarding immigration. More fear mongering and GOP bullshit
Howard , 2k people were on Malcom’s live. Total of an hour and a half. King of Morocco at the White House today. They outright called this an American op. And brought receipts. Elon started the online commentary and bots followed. Yes, to introduce fear into the electorate. Rubio involved. Trump tweets, this will be an issue for the midterm elections. Everyone, listen to Malcolm Nance. Cohen timed his live at the same time? Cohen’s article is an incredible piece of propaganda for Trump.
I love Malcolm. I hope he does have a lot of followers! On his live today I saw 6 comments. Maybe the 2000 figure is somewhere else. I wish Malcolm the most success ever!
That is how propaganda works. This is the line of thinking the government wants, government needs. Trump publicly echoed these thoughts. But behind that is the real truth. It is a US led operation to produce the results Michael writes about. Facetiously, Trump and king of Morocco are watching the footage and giving it a thumbs up.
It is the current democrats who earned a favorability of 13%. The establishment. The corporate. The centrists. His warnings are often driven by the need to maintain the status quo. The enemy, as he has written about are the progressives. The democratic socialists. Because change threatens every single one of them. The enemy isn’t maga? Or the Republican Senate? House?
Sanchez attributed the mass crossing to “human trafficking mafias” that had taken advantage of a decision by Spain’s supreme court, which recently ruled that those intercepted at sea while trying to enter Ceuta, or Spain’s other north African enclave of Melilla, could not be summarily returned under special rules. Sánchez said: “That has spread like wildfire during these last few hours through the networks of mafias that traffic in human beings and has produced an avalanche of the characteristics and dimension that we experienced yesterday.”
This article started off sounding like someone saying, "I'm not a racist, but..."
Whenever I hear someone saying something about the "hoards of people" trying to cross a border, I think about the plight of the people trying to cross. Cohen says they are trying to cross because they think it is easy, but how many people actually want to leave their homes and enter a hostile place? That is easy??
We all sit here in our cozy homes at our expensive computers or phones and ponder the fate of people whose lives are unfathomable to most of us. They are tsk tsked for crossing a manmade line often to try to escape something we couldn't possibly imagine.
I always think about the movie the Day After Tomorrow as well. It is a silly doomsday movie where huge winter storms are killing people left and right in America. There is a scene where Americans are piled up on our side of the wall in Mexico trying to get to where it is warmer, but now they are not letting us cross. I wonder how many of those fictional characters in the movie cheered on that wall being built.
Thank You Jennifer.. "hoards of people" what came to mind for me is shithead Elon Musk taking a chain saw to USAID ..The program that helps people in need in the countries that are in dire straits. It was also an excellent way to show the world the best parts of us.
I was thinking about what I wrote and want to continue.
I get it. Letting millions of people into a country without any sort of gatekeeping system is rife with problems. I don't know what the answers are, but I just wanted to point out that my thoughts go to the people trying to come and why.
I also think about what role the people in the favored country had in creating the conditions that are causing others to have to flee. When it comes to our own border, how much has our war on drugs caused such dire issues in countries to our south? How much has climate change that we've played such a heavy hand in causing ruined their lives? I've read about how it is hitting Central America very hard and causing farms to dry up. How much has the US meddling with the affairs of these nations caused more problems? Again, we sit here and judge people when our own government and policies and lives have ruined theirs. It enrages me when people think of only the macro side of this versus the micro.
Jennifer, I was reading about the Moroccans who crossed, and according to the article they are young men who are starving and cannot find work. Now, I am sure that is not the whole story and a percentage are most likely troublemakers. Nevertheless, as you say, these conditions happen for reasons beyond these folks' control in most situations. And, climate change is bound to cause more and more of this type of immigration. Here, even, we are going to experience the consequences very soon. Let's ignore compassion and The Golden Rule for a moment. It is actually in the better interests of the richer nations to bring aid now, work on controlling what parts of climate change we can, and adapt humane and adequate immigration policies. Fear, angst, denial, jingoism and clannishness will all work against us.
Well if the young men are starving, the women and children must have it A LOT WORSE, but these men choose to leave their families stranded than to actually do something about their conditions.
How many people actually want to leave their homes and enter a hostile place? A LOT OF THEM IF THE PLACE THEY ARE LEAVING IS SO INTOLERABLE THEY WOULD GO ANYWHERE TO GET TO A SLIGHTLY BETTER PLACE! It is easy for people like us who live in the USA to understand how desperate these people are. Which leaves us to the question? What can we do about it. I have always been a proponent of foreign affairs and how we cannot just shut out the rest of the World, because if we do they will eventually come to us. Helping make these countries better for the people that live there is worth it and a legitimate goal for the USA.
We need a return to Decency and a Respect for all Humanity.
Americans on a whole are Caring and Empathetic.
Yes, we need new Guardrails and Significant Reforms to better deliver Equality to All.
We could have done better and we did make small inroads but it was NOT ENOUGH.
The problem with Immigrants goes back Decades. No Party established a Fair and Clear Transition and Assimilation. That needs to Change. America is a Nation of Immigrants.
We need to resume our place as a World Leader. With Fair and Effective Funding. No longer do we need to give massive amounts of Money and Weapons to a Country because this is what we have always done.
We need to respect Sovereign Countries and Support our Allies. Ukraine needs to be admitted into NATO. We need to reaffirm our NATO Pledge. And Support Climate Change Initiatives.
We have allowed MINORITIES to become Leading Voices (MAGA/White Nationalism/Trump/Epstein Class, Project 2025/Musk and Billionaire Associates).
We have allowed Minority Voices to spew Anger, Fear, Religion, Culture, Racism and Misogyny to DIVIDE US.
We need to take back our Democracy and Save Our Democracy together!
And make the Necessary Changes to become a Better American Democracy.
Michael, first I really appreciate that you are still doing your substack in spite of the fact you are so busy with your new job. We enjoy it so much!
"Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, who arrived in Ceuta on Friday, described the influx as “a violation of Spain’s territorial integrity” and said he would use all the state resources at his disposal to guarantee the safety of the people of Ceuta. He attributed the mass crossing to “human trafficking mafias” that had taken advantage of a decision by Spain’s supreme court, which recently ruled that those intercepted at sea while trying to enter Ceuta, or Spain’s other north African enclave of Melilla, could not be summarily returned under special rules. The consequences of border crossings out of control can be severe and devastating on the community. Extreme lawlessness can result. Short of that resources can quickly become strained beyond limits.
Border crossings and immigration need to have clear regulations and enforcement. This however must be done within the law maintaining human rights and not without due process. This does not justify Gestapo techniques. This is a delicate balance.
I understand the massive invasion of immigrants into Spain, and that is a problem The problem in the US. is different. Trump promised to eliminate violent and law breakers from the U.S. This expanded into a massive ISIS program targeting many innocent individuals and killing some.
I live in an area where I am glad to have immigrants working in agriculture providing food for our nation. I don't know if they are legal or illegal. But they do work no average white man could or would do. They are not violent or law breakers. I feel totally safe. Trump & Company have taken this issue way out of proportion to the problems that exist. May he stop this behavior soon
Morocco deliberately loosened the borders allowing their citizens to escape to Spain in order to punish Spain for a recent reconciliation with Algeria. Algeria a hard line Muslim country is an enemy of Morocco. The whole thing is very irresponsible and immature of Moroccan officials, the stint has cost lives and is a huge burden on Spain since they must process all these claims. They will all be sent back but it doesn't stop them from dreaming of a life in Europe. Moroccans are very laid back, not religious fantics and pro western. They are however poor and over populated.
Has everyone forgotten that Ceuta is occuppied territory in Morocco? Just like the Spainish want Great Britain out of Spain (Gibralter), Moroccans want their territory back - Ceuta and Melilia.
I remember when we were younger, my wife and I visited Greece, and we had to learn how to drink Greek coffee. You had to drink only 80% of the coffee because the last 20% had coffee beans in it.
In our country, we have 30% of our population still supporting Trump, and I say let it be. Just like the Greek coffee, there are always sections of our population that we should ignore, and we should consider the 70% as one group.
Why is the House and the Senate divided in half according to party affiliation? Where did that come from? Why, according to political parties? Why not according to the 30/70 line? We should have a division between the 30% and the 70%. Both the House and the Senate should be divided according to this division, not according to party affiliation.
We should have a party of the 70%, and we should call it THE AMERICAN PEOPLE'S PARTY, THE PARTY OF THE 70%. I believe we have 70% of our country who all think alike, who all want the same thing, but this is not what our politicians want; they can only exist if we have two parties, not one party of 70 %.
Let's talk about those politicians: why do we have them, and where did they come from? Let's distinguish between politicians and administrators. We need administrators, but we don't need politicians. What is the definition of a politician? A politician is a person who participates in policy-making processes, usually holding a position in a political party or an elective office in government (Wikipedia). But present-day politicians are influenced by lobbyists and wealthy people like Elon Musk, and they have an agenda to keep themselves employed.
Remember that 70% party and think of them as a cohesive, homogeneous group, not a group divided into North and South or between Republicans and Democrats, but a group of people who have the same interests and want the same things for their government. In the NO KING marches, I am sure that they were not just Democrats walking but Americans from that 70% group, both from the North and the South, both republicans and democrats.
Our politicians are the gong in our thinking; they have an agenda unlike that of all of us in that 70% group, and they scream that this or that will raise your taxes, even though that is not true. Consider why they do that. Our politicians are paid performers, acting on behalf of the wealthy oligarchs who want to maintain or improve their wealth. They do not have the interests of that 70% group.
How do I get the 70% group to become active and organized so they can take care of themselves and eliminate the power of these politicians?
My dream is for this 70% to form their own party of one, where the platform is their platform, and the people fund this party. Consider the fact that our two political parties will hold secluded meetings to determine their platform. They make the choosing of the pope less secluded than these platform meetings, and their platforms are developed not by our needs, but by what will get them votes.
This group of 70%, among other things, will install controls to prevent the oligarchs from infecting their party and realizes that there is a fundamental agreement in that group about what they want and what they will work to have.
The 2k wasn’t a dig at cohen. It is that those people are now educated and can make sense of incorrect or trump narrative articles. I read cohen bc he is an independent registered centrist whose beliefs have contributed to a broken and corrupt Democratic Party. I’m a Democrat who wants meaningful change. He is not.
In this country no one can force you to subscribe. People are allowed to change their political affiliation. As often as they like in fact. You do some very interesting posts but if you no longer align with this growth and philosophy you have the freedom to change also.
I come here because most of the people responding are intelligent and thoughtful and I learn a lot from you guys.. not necessarily from Michael lately.
Thank you for independent thinking and honest opinions! You nailed a number of my pet grievances these days. Too many people seem afraid to voice an opinion that is not 100% far left, or is not 100% far right. I do not fully agree with some of your statements regarding current policies, but in a real democracy, we need honest opinions. I mean, good grief! If we read the “adult version” of how our Constitution was written, there were major, major disagreements in their discussions, and yet they believed in the goal strongly enough to get it done. It was imperfect then, and it's still imperfect now. Respectful disagreements are healthy. I don't have the impression that Trump considers disagreements healthy, however, and I am worried about his presidency’s long term effects with our global neighbors. On the other hand, too many current politicians are careful to hide what they think about anything, except for one thing - they like us to send more money.
