OMG, Michael! Do you realize that EVERY word you said to describe how Mamdani's actions/words are interpreted by New Yorkers scream of those said about Trump's actions and words? Only in Trump's case they're used to demean a person! Mamdani speaks on behalf of a person's rights, dignity and effort to raise themselves up, it doesnt harm or belittle them.

Almost the same words, but a world of difference between them and their intent.

Jennifer Kass's avatar

I was also thinking the exact same thing! Cohen had no problem standing alongside a man who did this exact thing to multiple other groups of people in this country. Where was his outrage when Trump vilified Muslims, Hispanics, veterans, disabled people, I could go on and on.

Elena Freshman Schumann's avatar

I am not a fan of Trump. However, Trump is NOT the issue, here. The issue is Mamdani and whether or not he is doing a proper JOB, it is his JOB we are addressing not Trump's.

Jennifer Kass's avatar

The article did not really address whether or not Mamdani was doing his JOB. It did not comment on all of the things he has actually accomplished since he has become mayor. It isn't like he has sat on his hands and only spoken out against Israel.

And Trump is ALWAYS the issue (see I can do all caps too) with me when it comes to politics. It drives me INSANE (ooh this is fun!) when people who have carried the water for Trump all these years and let him get away with his abhorrent behavior turn around and complain when someone else may be using Trump-like behavior. NOW it's a problem??

Elena Freshman Schumann's avatar

I do not care if you use CAPS, I know you are capable of using them, anyone can use them, so what? If you think Trump is always the issue that is your problem not mine, but you do seem to agree with me that some people are obsessed with the man and I guess you are also. I can also agree on what issues are disscussed in this article. Though it would have been nice if the author had addressed whether or not Mamdani was actually doing his job, that was a suggestion, of course the author can write on whatever topic he or she wants to.

Ruth A's avatar

Trump is living rent free in millions of people’s heads. That’s the real occupation that must end . If MC wrote about what he had for dinner folk would bring Trump into it.

Dennis's avatar

I was thinking the same thing

Janet Heath's avatar

Yeah. As I was reading this, I thought maybe Mamdani and Trump are related. Cohen described Trump.

Michael this piece is twisted and harmful. Bibi is coming to NYC in September . He is a war criminal . Wether you want to admit it or not he and his government are killing children in Gaza and the West Bank all the time. They do it without a thought. He is one with Trump. It was Kushner who said about Gaza "Oh good we will have beach front property."

Barbara Ann's avatar

I agree Netanyahu is a war criminal and I agree that he is committing atrocities in Gaza - but, to take it out on the entire Jewish community is not only wrong it is disgraceful. As Michael knows, my father’s unit liberated Auschwitz - are we heading back there, attacking and killing innocent Jews? No, I am not Jewish I am Catholic - that aside, as a human being I can’t stomach the hatred, antisemitism, racism, xenophobia and every other God forsaken form of oppression we are seeing today, including from our own government! Unfortunately, our arrogance will be the cause of our own demise; how very sad that is.

mary M keymer's avatar

Barbara Ann I hope and pray not. I don't think we can ignore what the government of Israel is doing for fear that innocent Jews will be attacked. No one should ever want anyone killed. I understand the fears, but the atrocities in Gaza cannot be ignored. They are being starved and brutalized . The world knows it. This should not be a reason for hateful antisemites to come out of the woodwork. Let's hope cooler heads will prevail.

Michelle Landa's avatar

Absolutely not. Bibi is a war criminal. Gaza is a horrible example of that. My heart goes out to the innocent Palestinians who are suffering.

Elena Freshman Schumann's avatar

If innocent Jews in the United States are being attacked than that is the failure of the United States, not Israel or any other country for that matter to protect its citizens. We often cannot control what other countries do and any unrest in OUR country has to be dealt with By US!!

Barbara Ann's avatar

Of course the atrocities in Gaza should not be ignored nor tolerated; but, for example, a Jewish man was stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver and prior to that an Asian man in the back, by the same guy. Enough is enough.

mary M keymer's avatar

I understand. I think the man who stabbed those two men is probably severely mentally il. That does not excuse him. The person we need to focus on is Trump and company he has created an atmosphere of hate through out the land. Rather then bring us together which is a part of a Presidents job he drives us apart every single day.

Michelle Landa's avatar

My dad’s division liberated one of the camps, but he is long gone so I cannot ask him which one. He refused to talk to us about the war. All I know is that the camp was in Germany.

Kate Griffith's avatar

💙 so well said! I'm jewish, my grandparents and parents were not in Europe at the time, but I have great aunts/uncles and family who were in France, all were sent to the camps. My mother's father was in the Canadian forces and like your father was there. He died in 2007 at age 81. He worried about it reoccurring. Here we are again, fascism has raised its ugly head. In Nazi Germany, Jews and anyone else who wasn't white enough was exterminated, what Mamdani needs to understand is that people like him, Arabs, Middle Eastern, Muslims, they would have all been slated for extermination. This hatred and stupidity needs to stop.

Barbara Ann's avatar

Italians need to learn it too, we’re not white enough! Once my father and I were talking about WWII I was studying it in school and I remember saying something like “well, Hitler is dead and all that’s over” something like that, but he looked at me dead in the face and said “don’t think it can’t happen again…” and here we are.

Kate Griffith's avatar

Exactly, we remember Musollini at first resisted the Nazis racial theory. According to Hitler southern Italians who are darker were inferior and not white enough. While Northern Italy and Southern Italians had some some deeply inked cultural prejudices Musollini initially pushed back. He later recanted and went after the 45,000 plus Italian Jews. Ironically it was Musollini who invented fascism with his beliefs that Italians were the superior race, he openly mocked Hitlers stance that Nordics were superior. I see Musollini in Trump, he says we wants Norwegians to immigrate to America but Asians, and anyone darker than a Sicilian or looks Latino needs to go. The Sicilian comment are my words not Trumps. It is frightening, and we all know things are not ok, everyone is against everyone in America. All we can all do it show love as Bad Bunny said. Love, literally the most powerful force on earth when we remember to use it. Just like your father did when he went to war to liberate people he didn't know.

Elena Freshman Schumann's avatar

Again what Bibi does or does not do does not relate to whether or not Mamdani is doing A GOOD JOB. ONE THING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OTHER!!! ALSO TWO WRONGS DO NOT MAKE A RIGHT!!

Howard's avatar

Another Mamdani hit piece. Yeah they should have elected the rapist Cuomo because that is the only profile you guys like and support

Thanks Michael: No matter what religion one my pray to , they should keep it out of the political arena . What ever happened to the separation of state and religion. Mamdani can worship any God he wants. His job as mayor is to serve all of New Yorkers be they heathens, Christians or Jews. He is allowed to have an opinion of Israel or Bibi Neyanyahu, Hell I have opinions about Netanyahu and they are in agreement with the Hague. Personally I am offended with this right wing Christian Nationalist movement filtering into the present administration. It seems to me that they speak from the New Testament but rule and act from the Old Testament. The military have their particular Chaplains ,, but I understand now Pete Hegseth has his own personal prayer service ongoing in the Pentagon. It appears to me there is too much religion filtering into government policies. Religion should be kept out of government policy. Just my take.

Dawn Cali's avatar

Al, yes.

We need to return to a position of Separation of Church and State! As our Founders wrote.

Starting first with throwing out the White Christian Nationalists who proclaim they are

Religious based and in fact are just in a Power and Control Mode as they Twist Scripture.

Americans deserve better.

Al Draycott's avatar

Thanks Dawn, you are spot on. Every last one of the White Christian Nationalist have got to be shipped out. "Every One"

Deb Bennett's avatar

Yes, AL. Agree. You have great points.

Joanne Held's avatar

The separation of church and state has gotten muddled. It must be corrected, and soon. The government is not allowed to push a religion or religious stance onto the citizenry. In my small, mostly Italian or Polish Catholic town, the nativity scene goes up in the city park, in front of the library, and all over the place. I voiced my opinion every year until recently. I am Jewish and scared. I was told not to wear my Jewish Star necklace or put my Menorah in the window at Chanuka. I wear my star and display my menorah with pride (and fear). My small sense of safety comes from the fact that I am the only Jew here, and there wouldn't be much publicity if they came for me.

Al Draycott's avatar

Thanks for sharing that Joanne. We should all be free of fear worshiping our God. It's tragic how the White Supremacist , Christian Nationalist have butchered ones faith.

Skip Day's avatar

The article is about cohen, a wealthy upper east side Jew, and his stance on Mamdani. Whatever. No comment needed. Except for the hyperbole.

I don’t live in NYC anymore so I texted my friends who do. There isn’t a bad feeling hanging over the city. Even a friend in a borough disagreed with the idea of a bad vibe in the city. Pockets of the upper east side and upper west might believe this, but the whole of the city does not.

Then I read this and thought you were talking about yourself.

“He hid behind carefully rehearsed talking points, wrapped himself in claims of speaking “objective facts,” and insisted his criticism was purely political.”

Howard's avatar

Way to go Skip. Facts speak truth. Haha Michael

Skip Day's avatar

The real rub of the story is how hard AIPAC , donors and centrists are all simultaneously moving in on candidates who want change. Progressives or the far left. Changes that leave the establishment with less power and influence. Spending $50 million against a progressive and support of a candidate who stands for nothing. If she wins, AIPAC will back the Republican for the win. AIPAC’s largest donors are republicans. It’s about Israel and every supporter needs to do their part which in this case includes another hit piece against Mamdani.

Dennis's avatar

He certainly wasn’t wrong about about the Israeli government

Lauren Smith's avatar

I have a real problem when people only blame Netanyahu for genocide. He is reacting to the slaughter of 1200+ Jewish people on 10/7/23. Hamas, in Iraq, use their own people as human shields to protect themselves from countries that want to annihilate them. Iran is also responsible for killing its own people. And, let's not forget the US. We are committing genocide every day with our endless Middle East wars. So, even though I don't support what Netanyahu is doing, I understand his desire to keep Isreal safe. For those of you blaming only Netanyahu for committing genocide, you need to look further into what is happening. There would be no genocide on the part of Isreal if Middle East counties would just leave Isreal the Hell alone, instead of trying to erase them from the world map. These countries would like nothing better than to kill every Jewish person on the planet. So, when politicians and the public talk about genocide, look at the bigger picture. Isreal alone is NOT the enemy and I'm sick and tired of the self righteousness of people like Mamdami who just want to blame one country and one people for all of the world's problems.

Howard's avatar

Like Trump Bibi is trying to stay out of jail and keep power that's what he cares about

Lauren Smith's avatar

I agree with you Howard. Netanyahu is committing war crimes. All leaders who commit war crimes should be prosecuted. I just want people to look at the larger picture and stop blaming one leader and one people. It's dangerous.

Dawn Cali's avatar

Lauren,

Netanyahu and his Supporters=Genocide.

Majority of Israeli and Jewish People want no part of this.

That Simple.

America is allowing this thru the Trump Regime support of Netanyahu along with the Funding.

This Funding To Israel needs to end.

And if there is an agreeable need, to be restructured, but must be reduced. And potentially also eliminated. Finally this is all on the table.

Americans deserve better.

Joanne Held's avatar

We have to put all this in context. Every war that involves Israel was started by another country or countries. The Arab nations all want the total and complete destruction of the State of Israel and all the Jews in the world. It's impossible to have negotiations when one party has such a radical, singular view. Netanyahu is a menace. He has committed war crimes. He has been trying to get rid of the Palestinians in Gaza by building settlements there. In 1978, when I was there, it was happening. I was asked to join a new Kibbutz in Gaza. I said no, and asked why they were building on land that belongs to someone else. The Jews unequivocally need a country of their own since persecution has been going on for thousands of years. But committing genocide is not the answer. I wish I had the answer, but I don't. It's horribly complicated, but it isn't going to go away. It will escalate until I have no idea when. It is just so damn sad.

Cindy Dore's avatar

So,embody has a bone to pick and has gone off the rails. IMHO.

Mike Tonge's avatar

Of course Fox is capitalizing on this. I'm not a New Yorker so I had to search for news. Most of the search results linked to Fox videos. I found a Politico article that seemed to be a fair journalistic report of Mamdani's public remarks and the responses from Eric Goldstein (UJA) and several prominent New York elected officials. They all said the same things Michael is saying in this article; words matter, language matters, elected officials need to tone down the rhetoric that has day-to-day implications on the people that they serve and represent.

Kate Griffith's avatar

"Think about the breathtaking narcissism of that performance." Michael is absolutely 💯 right about this. Stop and think about it. Regardless of your position on Trump and Netanyahu. Now I have zero legal understanding of how things work in the US, but it appears it's not legal to arrest a foreign leader and Federal law overrides any International Law court rulings. Ok the Mayor should have a clue instead of soliciting advice from lawyers and making public statements about it. But lets just look at the big pitcure here. The US and Israel are allies, Netanyahu, like or hate him has been a guess multiple times in Washington, the US right or wrong is participating in a war together against Iran and it's Islamic Regime, whom, you must understand absolutely despise's Israel and what it sees as the Christian infedel west. Ok so Mr. Mamdani thinks he, all by himself, a lowly mayor is going to arrest Netanyahu, the president of Israel. Ok....try to imagine the repercussions of such a stunt. I do understand that in Canada, our Prime Minister would have the RCMP , that's the Royal Mounted Canadian Police arrest Netanyahu if he were to visit. We haven't invited him, and he knows he's not welcome, but in such a senerio it would be with great trepidation that we would make such a move. Does Mamdani have any fucking clue what the repercussions in the middle east would be? What the repercussions for America would be? Can he fathom the potential blood shed and unrest? No he cannot because as Michael pointed out he is a full on raging narcissist. Even if there was actually a law stating Mamdani could arrest Netanyahu, it still has to clear the president's desk, world leaders need to notifed and in support of it; especially in this case. It's like lighting matches in a powder gegg. Mamdani is not actually a democratic socialist, that's not what they do, he is more akin to a wolf in sheep's clothing opening the door to a new dangerous ideology in America.

Deb Bennett's avatar

Kate, I remember too well what happened when Hamas invaded Isreal. I was visiting my sister and we just stared at each other, shocked. Women raped and burned. Babies slaughtered. People kidnapped. Murder, death, horror everywhere.

I reluctantly understood Netanyahu's actions ( reluctant because he spoke of Hamas hiding in the tunnels, needing to rescue the hostages which meant other people dying). Of course, he had to send a message to Hamas. Of course, he had to find the hostages.

But, it just went on and on. Now, the Palestinian people were being slaughtered and starved. Parents wailing over their babies bodies. Little kids losing their families. Doctors, but few medical supplies. People starving, but food truck not allowed in.

None of it is o.k.

Kate Griffith's avatar

It definitely is not ok. It's not ok to repay evil with more evil that never ends. People forget that it's well documented that Netanyahu's government encouraged Qatari funds be funneled into Gaza to prop up Hamas for the sole purpose of preventing a two state solution. The PLO of the west bank was at odds with Hamas, a home grown terrorist organization. The PLO recognizes Israels right to exist though the road to peace has always been a bumpy one. Netanyahu calculated correctly that the two sides would have disputes, the Fatah was expelled from Gaza. While Netanyahu's fat head and ego blinded him, Hamas was planning it's horrific attack against innocent unsuspecting people. Netanyahu has their blood on his hands, he is an evil despicable man who has destroyed Israel's reputation. This war on Iran, also Bibi's idea, the chief of Mossad, Barnea believed that decapitating the Iranian leadership would lead to a regime collapse, something we could all hope for. But there was no evidence of an imminent nuclear threat, that was just the excuse to go in. The plan has obviously failed, the chief of Mossad badly misjudged the situation. Again we have more dead people, more blood on both Netanyahu's and Trump's hands. Where this ends? Only G-d knows.

Deb Bennett's avatar

Thanks for your insights, Kate. Some of these things, I wasn’t really clear on.

Michelle Landa's avatar

As a Jew I despise Netenyahu. He is without question a war criminal. However, Mamdani does not just hate Netenyahu, he is without question anti semitic. His job is not to arrest Bibi, his job is to keep his hatred to himself and fix potholes, clean up NYC and provide affordable living to his constituents. These are not Trump’s words. These are MY words. This mayor is causing hatred and discord in the very city he has been elected to help. He has made me afraid to go into the city to do the things I enjoy, to meet friends, to see a show and just enjoy a day there. I loathe his platform. I loathe his hatred. He is not in my estimation the epitome of what a mayor should be.and just to add, my own father was in the fifth infantry with the Golden Arrow Division and was one of the soldiers who liberated one of the camps. We have pictures and artifacts to prove their hatred.

This is off topic but it seems important and no one is talking about it. Trump offically announced his presidential run in 2028.
