As Trump peddles his tariff tantrums as patriotism, consumers foot the bill while CEOs raise prices. It's time Democrats fight fire with three-word slogans that stick. "CONSUMERS PAY TARIFFS".
Prices are already higher in my area. Gas just got down to $3.00 and when it hits that mark it goes up by 30 to 40 cents, then works it's way down and then back up again. I am paying $3-$4 more at the grocery store for the same items I bought 3 months ago. Expect that to go up a lot more. As a person living on a small social security, I will be buying less as time goes on. I, like so many others, will have to tighten purchases, so that I can pay for taxes, insurances, power, fuel to survive the rest of the year. tRump is not going to make it easier - it will become harder to survive with him at the helm. Maybe Maga rich should start making donations to worthy causes, instead of just lining their pockets with all the money that they can't spend in their lifetimes. It would be interesting to see, if they donate money to worthy causes.
I love avocados but the ones in the stores are terrible. They were picked too early and don't ripen properly. The price of a large bag, 20 ounces, of coffee has gone up $2 already. Beef, a lot of which comes from Brazil and Argentina, has gone up $2 a pound. Eggs are still the same price, they haven't come down. Most clothing will go up soon because it's made in China.
The harebrained idea that factories should be built here will result in disaster for our air and water, our neighborhoods, and prices will actually be higher because Americans will not work for the same pay as people do in China. And who will work in agriculture? The Blacks? That's the idea. They don't say it, but the message is clear. The goal is to turn America into a dystopia that feeds the rich whites.
Can't argue with ANY of that. I keep thinking about how clueless Americans are about FAST FASHION, and the destruction it does to the environment. I keep thinking about how pissed Americans were at Obama for pushing the TPP. Democrats hated it. But Obama was right. If we don't control industry, environmental and labor standards in the Trans Pacific Rim, which where a lot of our consumer goods are manufactured, someone else will--that meant NO ONE would care. People see only what they want to see. Pushing it out into the open, will help.
I suspect we will be seeing more of that as time goes by. If the items are in the store, they will be so expensive that we won't be able to afford them. Hope the farmers markets have a lot of fresh items this summer. They will probably cost more this year, but maybe not as high as the grocery stores.
Local farmers also rely on immigrant labor to plant and harvest fruits and vegetables, which will rot in the fields when there's no one to do that work.
As always Michael, right on point with the truth. I am frustrated that the Democratic leadership is not doing exactly what you’re saying. We are not going to win this war with the current strategy.
As you usually do, Michael, you hit the nail on its head.
My question to the Magats that worship the Orange TACO, how has this administration made your life better? By deporting immigrants who haven’t done anything wrong except tried to live a decent life? Or maybe you’re better off because the cost of everyday living has gone up because of Tariffs (taxes) and that makes you happy because you feel you’re helping America get better? Or maybe it’s that the Orange Turd has gotten rid of DEI, because who wants to live in a country where citizens are Diverse, or where all folks are treated Equally, and all are Welcomed. The answer from the people that worship TACO when asked are you better off is crickets…I have to believe and hope that these sorry-assed people will realize they’ve been duped once again by the Grifter in Chief.
TARIFFS ARE TAXES, KNOWLEDGE AND FACTS RULE, #8647 so we can fix what he broke and get back to having the best country in the world that is revered and respected once again.
History (OMG!) backs this up. "[Due to] the Crash of 1929, President Hoover signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act...to protect American farmers from the economic downturn. European countries promptly retaliated with tariffs of their own, [which] caused trade between Europe & the U.S. to decline by two-thirds...some observers argued that the tariffs contributed to European bank failures & exacerbated the economic turmoil of the 1930s, thereby giving rise to extremist ideologies throughout Europe .
Yes! I also am on Social Security here and relate. With retirement, I expected to make some adjustments, but not to the extent required now! Sometimes I cook large batches of foods bought on sale, and then divide and freeze reasonable portions that can be consumed within reasonable time frames after thawing and reheating. I was doing this in my low income student days, and was expecting changes during retirement, but not like this! How do people with jobs have time to take these extra measures? They probably do not! WE ARE IN TROUBLE!!
And so many, just so…FINE with losing. Trump has them taught well. Trump so LOVES his low-educated voters. He has said this publicly—to applause. It’s hard to wrap my head around this kind of destructive and willful, ignorance.
Michael, it's a cult. You can't get through to them by yelling in their faces. In fact, there's only one way cults fall apart. It's when there's a catastrophic change that opens people's eyes.
Trump has built a machine that counters everything the voices of reason say. It's very effective. He's not the first one to do it. Hitler, Mussolini, and others throughout history have done it. It works when there's a large enough society of people who are resentful. Along comes a charismatic guy (it's always a guy) who talks the talk. He cannot walk the walk because he's a coward, but JD Vance is not. He will be Trump's successor. It's all laid out in Project 2025, whose architects are the real power behind the throne of King Donald. Trump himself is a greedy, corrupt babbling idiot, and he's old.
The soil where Trump has planted the seed of resentment is racism. Until this is widely recognized, there is no hope of killing it. Read the manifesto of Project 2025.
"So while Trump rails about “America First,” he’s actually making life more expensive for working Americans—first, second, and third. And the worst part? He’s banking on the fact that you won’t understand it. That you’ll fall for the flag-waving and ignore the receipt in your hand that’s getting longer every month." Questions.
Just WHEN did the Republican Party decide that they OWN the American flag? Do they think they have a monopoly on patriotism? I'm pretty sick of it. Someone needs to remind them that so many brave Americans fought and died for our freedoms, liberties, our democracy, and YES--our FLAG. That flag flies (for now) for ALL of US. Let's respect it the way it should be respected, as a reminder of what we could lose if we don't all GET BUSY.
I like “Impeach and Convict!” or “Twenty Fifth Amendment!” but they’re likely not to get as much traction as your suggestions. I can’t type the ones I’m really imagining.

and I recently went into my local grocery store, and there was NOT ONE grape in the store--of any color or variety. It was stunning. Says a lot.

good thought on that.

Consumers pay Tariffs & rich get richer
