This administration must be stopped. The only way we the people can do this is to vote in the midterms and stop this horrible government shift. You can’t just register. You MUST vote. We have 2 more years with this maniac-in-chief, but a Democratic House can do something these Republicans are unwilling to do. Just re arranging the chairs is not going to matter at all. The dems are also dysfunctional and all of this is at least in part their own fault because they are not offering a reasonable alternative to the Trump people.

"Congress appears increasingly sidelined." Not quite accurate. Congress CHOSE to be sidelined. We have a GOP that sits on its hands. Enablers all. They control all branches of government, and they are doing NOTHING to stop the corruption and dictatorial whims of a very unfit con man. I write to my 3 ruby-red elected un-representatives daily to tell them what I think. We all should be doing that. Call, write, and boycott (as noted by another commenter).
I have seen no evidence of life from those offices. They send out propaganda letters and emails in response. However, despite the lack of change, I feel it's my civic duty to remind them that they are supposed to represent ALL their constituents, not just the wealthy. They are on notice, as far as I'm concerned. Their offices do count the opinions of voters on issues.

Unfortunately, most of our Calls for Action go unheard and unshared. Less than 95% of the US population is supporting the resistance on the required daily basis. That 95% are doing absolutely nothing to resist. Knowing that the tRump is evil and waiting for an election that may not happen does not count as supporting the resistance. We are funding this evil nightmare and the fascist are getting more powerful every day because most Americans are sitting back and not participating at all.

I can agree with what he’s saying here. Even though our allies viewed us as a global security advocate, the public in other countries has long seen the US as an unchecked, overreaching power. And that was before Trump and his vendetta against the world. Trump has only accelerated that narrative shift. We’re now ignoring our former allies and acting purely on our own whims - destabilizing the world in the process.
Everybody's Mamá, your credibility diminishes when you post repeatedly, IMO. However, I prefer to reply to Michael's essay. Technological advancements over the years have, unsurprisingly, changed the way countries govern themselves and how they exist together. The world has gotten smaller as these things have stopped being novelties and are now available to all. The pace of the changes has also increased. With that being said, we now live in a world where the leaders can communicate in real time. There isn't time to think and reflect before a decision must be made. Add unscrupulousness to the mix, and we are now living with uncertainty, which is not a comfortable place to be. It is all these things that have brought us to where we are now. We are in a mess. Trump is foolish and has no sense of what is right or wrong. He knee-jerks his responses without careful thought. What is even more dangerous is that he decides too quickly what to do and moves on to the next project before the others are finished. The overall sense is, to me, nerve-racking, and it ends up costing us way too much monetarily and hurts our reputation. The momentum increases, and everything gets worse. The pace increases but never decreases. And mistakes increase. And the mistakes get costlier. And there is no 'fix'. Even after Trump, there still aren't going to be ways to reverse the damage he has done. He has been stacking the deck all this time, and we have no other deck to use. It is a sad state of affairs.
We are fortunate that these hunt-and-destroy tactics have not been used by foreign powers against Americans, as our own leaders likely are guilty of transgressions similar to those being punished.
